It is 70kgs lighter than its predecessor thanks to a body thats 20% aluminium, it is faster, it has fewer emissions, fuel economy has been improved partly down to the inclusion of stop/start technology, there is loads more kit and it's more refined. Audi tells us this car, the seventh generation, handles better than the previous six. To passers by you might consider it better looking than the rest too, but thats a moot point. The A6 Avant now includes the Drive Select system allowing the driver to tweak the settings of the suspension and throttle response. The Audi A6 Avant was tested by Euro NCAP and was awarded a 5 star overall rating. Its loaded with safety kit such as front airbags with front passenger deactivation and side head airbags, seat belt monitoring and an antitheft alarm with tow-away protection. There is a lot of space inside the Audi A6 Avant. Four adults fit easily with loads of head and legroom, while the middle rear seat is suitable for shorter journeys only due to its smaller size. Each door has cubbies to store belongings, and rear seat passengers get their own climate control system. As you would expect the interior of the A6 Avant is identical to the saloon. All the switchgear is laid out in an orderly setup. The focal point in the cabin is the knob that controls the MMI infotainment system, it allows you to control audio, the Bluetooth phone interface and the satnav. The build quality of the cabin is very good indeed, everything feels very well screwed together. The car rides well over undulating surfaces which means its best on motorways but it can still hold its own on B-roads. There is little road noise from the tyres, the seats are well bolstered and the side supports hold you in well when cornering. The lowest fuel bills come courtesy of the 2.0 litre TDI Ultra diesel engine, which returns up to a claimed 64.2mpg in some specifications. We have heard of no reason to be concerned about the A6 Avants reliability. Many of its mechanical parts are tired and tested in other Audi products, and there havent been any major recalls to be concerned about. Audis Drive Select system is on hand to change the characteristics of the car to your preferences. In Comfort mode it is a fairly serene experience, with slightly more latent gear changes and a lazier engine characteristic. Choosing Dynamic means everything is sharpened, throttle response is on a knife edge and the gearbox swaps its cogs incredibly quickly. Driving fast in this mode is incredibly rewarding, but beware, your fuel economy will suffer. Individual is the other mode you may want to consider. This lets you set up your own profile with all of the characteristics you would like, including the weighting of the steering, engine and gearbox response, suspension settings and many more besides. The A6 remains the top car in its sector, a ringing endorsement of an excellent design in the first place. So if you are after a large, practical car, with a fantastic driving experience the A6 Avant is a great option.
