It may have four doors and look similar to the Audi A4 Saloon, but the Audi A5 Sportback is designed to be quite different. For starters it is actually a hatchback, giving it extra practicality, while there is also more passenger space for those in the back. So why is it part of the A5 range? Well, according to Audi, its coupe appearance is more in keeping with the sporty A5 line up, plus its unique with few obvious alternatives. Its an ideal choice for those who need more versatility than a standard saloon like the BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C Class, while a refined cabin make it great for long distance driving. As you would expect from an Audi, build quality is superb while every engine in the line up offers impressive performance and strong economy. While the Audi A5 may appear much like an Audi A4 saloon, the A5s rear hatch lends it far more practicality. The wide hatch entrance makes it ideal for loading large items and the boot is a generous size at 480 litres. Folding the rear seats is easy and they are divided 60/40, fold almost flat to the floor and leave a cargo bay of 980 litres that can cope with most demands. A small lip form the load sill to the boot floor is present, but it is not insurmountable for hefting in weightier items. With the boot in normal configuration, there is a clever load cover built into the tailgate that keeps prying eyes away from any valuables in the boot. Audi A5 Sportback safety performance has not been separately tested by Euro NCAP, but its heavily based on the A4, which has a five-star rating and would perform similarly in a crash. Occupants are well protected with at least six airbags on all cars, standard electronic stability control and anti whiplash head restraints. There are ISOFIX child seat mounting points on the outer rear seats. This is where the A5 Sportback stands out. Unlike most cars this size, its a hatchback rather than a saloon and so is able to offer 480 litres of boot space, the same as the A4. But the big advantage is the hatch opening which means it is easier to carry larger loads. And for more awkward items such as bicycles, the rear seats easily split and fold down to boost overall luggage room to 980 litres. As you would expect of an Audi, the build quality of the cabin is superb with high quality materials used throughout and an upmarket feel. The driving position is spot on and there is masses of adjustment in both the seats and steering column which moves for height and reach. Everything works with real precision. An electric parking brake means space is freed up on the central console and all models come with a colour screen and a central dial via which all the stereo and sat-nav (where chosen) functions can be controlled. Audi A5 Comfort levels are pretty impressive. Thanks to a longer wheelbase than the A4 saloon, along with extra width, the Sportback has plenty of room in the back, even for taller passengers. The coupe shape means wind noise is very low, even at high speeds, while excellent noise insulation and refined engines make the cabin serenely comfortable. The seats are exceptionally good.
